Richard Cedar’s Kinetic Sculptural Skeleton Clocks – Functional Art to Enliven Your Home or Business
My philosophy is that the most interesting part of a clock is its mechanism—why hide it in a box? My clocks bring the mechanism to the front to fascinate and “hypnotize” the viewer.

Helix – My latest clock is now being tested in my workshop
Helix—This is my first clock using a Balance Wheel Escapement similar to those used in mechanical watches but much larger.
Helix is a wall-mounted wooden skeleton wall clock constructed primarily from walnut wood with brass, steel, and carbon fiber components.
This clock uses a “hairspring” and “balance wheel” escapement to set its speed. This results in a slow, “hypnotic” motion and beat.
The clock is wound by a small battery-powered electric motor that lifts the “remontoire” (winding) arm on the winding wheel.
Helix measures approximately 27 inches tall (from the top of the “balance wheel” to the bottom of the clock), 19 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. The clock is undergoing final testing.
Aion-2 Compound Pendulum Wall Clock
The second clock in the Aion family uses a double compound pendulum to regulate its speed and accentuate the visual kinetics of its motion.
Aion-2 is a wall-mounted wooden skeleton clock constructed primarily from walnut wood with brass and steel components.
Unlike many of my previous clocks, this clock’s beat is set by a double compound pendulum that gives the mechanism a two-second beat. The clock is wound by a small battery-powered electric motor that lifts the “remontoire” (winding) arm on the winding wheel.
Aion measures approximately 36 inches tall (from the top of the pendulums to the bottom of the clock), 21 inches wide, and 9 inches deep.

Torsional Pendulum Wall Clock Electra-4
The latest iteration in the Electra family of clocks – “Electra – 4”. This skeleton clock features a “canoe” shaped walnut frame and a 22-inch diameter great wheel.
Electra – 4 is a wall-mounted wooden skeleton clock constructed primarily from walnut with brass and steel components.
Like my other clocks, this one’s beat is set by a torsional pendulum that gives the mechanism a slow rhythmic motion. It has been designed for customers or situations where winding the clock every day is inconvenient. The clock is wound by a small battery-powered electric motor that lifts the “remontoire” (winding) arm on the winding wheel.
This is the largest clock currently offered, measuring approximately 50 inches tall (from the top of the clock to the bottom of the torsional pendulum), 22 inches wide, and 10 inches deep.
Please see the Purchase page for details of this clock and others that are available for sale, or contact me to discuss commissioning a clock.
Torsional Pendulum Wall Clock #2
This wall-mounted wooden skeleton wall clock is constructed primarily from walnut, brass, and steel components. The clock’s beat is set by a torsional pendulum that gives the mechanism a slow rhythmic motion. Weight-powered, it runs for about 26 hours between windings and is accurate to a few minutes per day.

Torsional Pendulum Table Clock #4
This wooden skeleton table wall clock is constructed primarily from walnut and has brass and steel components. The clock’s beat is set by a torsional pendulum that gives the mechanism a slow rhythmic motion. Spring-powered, it runs for about 26 hours between windings.

Torsional Pendulum Wooden Table Clock – Horus
This clock was selected for the Clifton Cultural Arts Center 2021 juried Golden Ticket exhibition, October 29 – December 3, 2022, and took second place in the NAWCC 2022 Convention Craft Competition – Wooden Clocks Class.

Torsional Pendulum Acrylic Table Clock – Horus
This is my first clock made from acrylic plastic, a total departure from all my other clocks. It is based on the design for the Horus Wooden Clock, with minor modifications to accommodate easily available acrylic plastic sheet thicknesses.
A video of the clock in motion is on YouTube.
