Learn about Richard Cedar
I have always been interested in mechanical contraptions and vividly remember as a child taking a clock apart and being unable to put it back together. This led to majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Technology – UMIST (Now the University of Manchester) in England. After graduating, I joined Rolls-Royce – Derby and spent the next six years learning about aircraft engine design and obtaining a Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics.
In 1987, I crossed the Atlantic to work at GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, Ohio. I worked at GE for 32 years, contributing to the design of most of the commercial aircraft engines that GE developed before retiring in 2019.
My interest in clocks was rekindled on a cold winter night in 2004 when I was looking for something to amuse myself and came across Jeff Schierenbeck’s Wooden-Gear-Clocks website. This was the beginning of my adventures in clock design and construction, which are described on the History tab.
