My Latest Clock – Helix – is Running

This is my first clock using a Balance Wheel Escapement similar to those used in mechanical watches but much larger.

Helix is a wall-mounted wooden skeleton wall clock constructed primarily from walnut wood with brass, steel, and carbon fiber components.

This clock uses a “hairspring” and “balance wheel” escapement to set its speed. This results in a slow, “hypnotic” motion and beat.

The clock is wound by a small battery-powered electric motor that lifts the “remontoire” (winding) arm on the winding wheel.

Helix measures approximately 27 inches tall (from the top of the “balance wheel” to the bottom of the clock), 19 inches wide, and 7 inches deep.

Helix is currently undergoing final testing.
